My new year's resolution

My resolution for the year of 2005 is to learn to speak fluent French. I define 'fluent' as being comfortable speaking to random people in Montreal and understanding what they say in return. This could be quite a hard task, since I am not particularly good at languages. I do have a decent base from my high-school French to build off of though. It's an ability which I have strongly desired for some time now. I have done very little to actually grab this desire though. That will change now.

My first goal is to start working at least 1 hour a day on my French. I will be looking for some kind of formal French course (hopefully intensive) in January to get the ball rolling. After that I think I can keep going as long as I continue to dedicate myself to it. I recently read an encouraging article entitled How I Learned French in One Year written by a person who decided to learn French to take the test for Canadian immigration.

Everyone please feel free to help me along, whether it's by asking me about my progress or buffing up your own French so we can all speak together. It's a valuable skill to have if you are living in Montreal (or planning to). Yeah, it will take some work, but the result will certainly be worth it.

I'm planning to learn Spanish, which will be more useful for me where I live. Hopefully the same techniques will work for me.

I recommend listening and/or watching the news in French. If that is too hard, try doing it after watching the English news.

Andrew: Non merci, j'ai un voyage aujourd'hui.

I'd second Vinny's suggestion, but I'd add reading the French newspapers - it'll build your vocabulary.

Also French porn. 'Cause the vocabulary's limited and you can usually figure out what's being said, so it helps train your ear. ;)

it's true, you never know when you're going to have to tell the plumber he's right, it is hot, and it's OK for him to take his shirt off.
