Said the MSM was making a big, and wrong, deal out of the religious sects. Said Iraqis are incredibly nationalistic. They are Iraqis first and then say they are Muslim but the Shi'a - Sunni thing is just not that big a deal to them.

This person has been to Iraq???

I asked my middle easter studies professor a similar question and she said that Iraqi identity was extremely complex, and almost always misrepresented in the Western press. Clan is perhaps a more salient part of Iraqi identity than religion, but both coexist with strong feelings of nationalism (except for the Kurds who would really prefer their own country). My prof suggested that while religion does matter to Iraqis the Americans may have made the situation worse, and hardened sectarian identities, by focusing on the Sunni/Shite split to the exclusion of greater or smaller group allegiances.

Is it any more or less complicated than, say, a Canadian identity? Certainly the idea of a homogeneous or dual culture is always going to be an oversimplification.

At least we can all agree that all Iraqis have big bushy mustaches.
