Spore - aka Sim Universe
I just watched a video of a talk given by Sims creator Wil Wright at last year's GDC. The demo he gives is spectacular! The game starts with tiny creatures and allows you to control some evolutionary growth as you progress to higher order creature, gain intelligence, form cities and a society, compete with other tribes (through means military, economics or cultural), onto gaining spaceflight and visiting other worlds (which were themselves formed by another player's evolutionary actions and downloaded into your universe). Then in the 'space game' you can switch to any of the earlier stages as you desire.I was seriously blown away.
