He's exactly like that in person. He said all those things and more. He is terribly put out by improvisors trying to be funny and original.

I just realized that it wasn't clear that I was trying to be ironically sensationalistic with the title, in reference to the misleading title "KEITH JOHNSTONE RECANTS!" and photo caption "KJ CALLS IMPROV STUPID!"

My take was more of KJ as a father who sees his child prodigy grow up content to play cover tunes in a bar band rather than write the brilliant new symphonies that he was capable of. It's probably irksome to someone with the spirit of an iconoclast to see some of his ideas now calcified into dogma. I'm sure he bristles everytime he hears the word "guru", or when the millionth person says, "Hey, come check out our troupe..." Like he needs to watch any more mediocre improv simply because people read a couple of his books.

Kudos, Keith.. Give 'em hell!

I asked him at the workshop if people get completely opposite ideas from "Impro" versus what he intended. He said people do it all the time. He tried to address much of it in "Impro for Storytellers" and his publishers keep harassing him to revise "Impro" to his tastes but he's pretty much done revisiting that well.

Also, I can't even begin to imagine the sheer quantity of improv he's seen...

This just in - HBC Recants! Improv NOT stupid!

Also, thanks for the 187 shoutout goodladd.

187 Johnstone's walk into a bar. There was one named Keith, one named Sally, one named Joe, one named John, etc. John spoke for them all. They stroll in and ask for a beer. The bartender says, "We don't serve your kind here!" They ask, "Why not?" He replies, "Well, frankly, I don't like John's tone!!!!"
