Vorg is the new name for SillyTech. That's the software that my blog runs on, along with a bunch of other cool people.

The Tag Cloud shows what Vorg blogs about. Authors - tags are a powerful way of us becoming internet authorities on topics we care about. Highlights include the map blog, music blog, photo blog, video blog, art blog, Montreal blog, and Vancouver blog.

RSS feeds are being pumped out for individual tags, individual authors and the full Vorg.

The Funny Quote Database has an improved view!

Vorg is continuing its slow and steady growth. All feedback is welcome. Some more improvements are planned soon. Also, we're looking for a few good bloggers to join Vorg.

Why the name change? Running 2 entirely different websites both starting with Silly in their names wasn't working for me. I hope you like Vorg.ca as a domain, I think it's pretty awesome. I'm gradually putting URL redirects in place with the goal of minimizing loss of google mojo. Everything should be switched over in the next few days.

It seems like a lot of people can't leave comments while logged in right now because of the spam filter. What gives, Dustin? I, for one, have a number of fictional dialogues between Amazon.com and One Metre Beer that I'm dying to get started.

Has anyone seen this before?

The Gender Genie

Based on the work of some Israeli linguists, this algorithm looks at a chunk of text and guesses whether or not the author was male or female. In the original study it guessed correctly something like 90% of the time, though the web-based tool has a lower success rate.

A quick rundown of the blogs I tested:

Me - Consistently guessed male
Adrienne - Mostly guessed female, one false male guess
Budman - Consistently guessed female
Sean - Mostly guessed male, one false female guess

I'm not sure what this proves, apart from the fact that Budman apparently has a very feminine writing style.

I updated the sidebar to include a random photograph on each page. The pictures are selected from the Sillytech Pool on flickr. Everyone is welcome to join the group and add their best photos to be included.

Multiple category tags per post

I upgraded the category system on my blog. Posts can now be put in multiple categories. When posting there's a free-form text field where any category labels can be entered. This means that categories don't have to be pre-defined. This approach has been successful in a number of other websites, and has come to be known as tags (or 'tagging'). Eventually I'll make a nice tag cloud (like the one at flickr) to show the weight of each category in the total make-up of posts.

Hopefully it doesn't break anything (let me know if you notice something).

OK, so I felt like I was on a roll with sillytech and decided to continue with some more changes...

The categories have been sorted out, with all the skit-like ones being put back in and every category being made available to everyone. The categories are listed near the bottom of the sidebar on every page. There is also a 'Friends of Sillytech' list in the sidebar on every page. These are blogs or websites that I read regularly. I have mentioned some of them before, but I will try and introduce them all eventually. They are some good reading if you are bored. If you want to suggest a site to add toss me an email.

Also, when editing posts you can now change the Title and category.

a javascript 'Blog This' bookmark

I made myself this little javascript statement and saved it as a bookmark. Now I just have to click it to be brought to the blog page here at sillytech with a link to the page I was at input into the textarea. Give it a try on your end if you want. Just create a bookmark/favorite and paste this (all on one line) into the URL part of the bookmark. Javascript is pretty severely different across browsers, so let me know if it doesn't work.

a PHP or PERL regular expression to make links out of URLs

I just spent the last little while writing this virtuously verbose line of code. It does a search and replace using PERL regular expression syntax from PHP. (Note that the line breaks should be removed for it to work):

It's effect it to turn a fully qualified URL (i.e. something that starts with http://) into a link. For example http://test.com. It has to be so complex because there is a large variety in what URLs look like. For example ftp://somethinglong.foo.co.nz/blah-goo/~filter.shtml?t&a=good is a perfectly valid URL and should therefore be linked as one. Feel free to try and stump it by giving some wacked out URLs.

It will work in comments as well.

dynamic content redirection using 404 pages

I fixed a rather nasty bug in sillytech today, which had been stopping Google from indexing any of the user or thread pages. This happened because of how the user and thread pages work. You see they don't actually exist. There is no file on my webserver called '~dustin' and there is no file with the path '/threads/10' either. All of these pages are served to you through a bit of shifty work involving 404 error pages.

In a few '.htaccess' files (which are responsible for setting apache web server configuration) I have ErrorDocument 404 handlers setup. Then on the handler page the requested URL is examined (using PHP's $REDIRECT_URL variable). The page determines what it is that the user actually wants and outputs it to their browser.

The problem was that since it was being served through an error handler document apache would also send a HTTP status code of 404 (meaning page not found). SInce google doesn't appear to index things that return this code (sensibly enough) none of these pages were being searched by google. I believe that the problem has been corrected, by setting the status header directly from the error handler (in PHP it's done with 'header("Status: 200");').

Anyway, the reason that any of this is done is that I like having clean URLs.

For the past little while I have wanted to add an RSS news aggregator to sillytech. Today I finally searched around for any open-source ones written in PHP for me to use. The two best hits on the web appear to be zFeeder and feed on feeds. When I have some time I will install them and see if it's what I want.

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It is a specification for a machine readable version of news (or a blog). By using an aggregator you can collect all the RSS that you are interested in onto one webpage. It works sorta like the livejournal friends page, but in an open way so it's not just limited to lj.

Aside: while you may not know it, lj actually generates an RSS feed for every user (note: since RSS is meant to be machine readable that link won't look pretty to you).

The Sillytech keeps on a changin'

Today I pushed a bunch of changes I have made onto the live version of sillytech. The main things are as follows:

Comments
- no longer have a subject
- are no longer threaded
- a name and url/email can be left by people that don't have accounts

Categories
- every skit-thang and weblog has a category
- every category has a page that lists everything in it
- every user account can create their own blog categories

Users
- users can now specify their own styles
- the user pages (like mine) have been redone to show everything that user has posted
- a little 'About the author' box appears on the left of any posts made by that user
- when logged in and not viewing someone else's post your own box will appear at the top left

And some other random changes have been made as well. I'm sure that there are bugs lying in wait, please inform me if you find one.

Currently sillytech is optimized as a closed system. You must have an account in order to post new items or have comments attributed to you. There is the possibility of posting comments anonymously without an account, but it isn't as open as it could be. It should be as easy as possible for random strangers to comment on a post that is of interest to while leaving their name and/or contact info.

So some changes to commenting are imminent. You could say that the system to come will be a hybrid of the current sillytech system with the typical movable type method, an example of which can be seen here.

Sillytech's search functionality has been improved. Results are now shown 10 at a time and they are ordered newest first. The search is pretty good (if I don't say so myself), it makes sillytech useful for jotting down info for later.

I made some changes to code that adds/switches the current poll. I hope it works better now.

My name is kevin.� I am part of a�theatre group�at the university of Wisconsin 
Stout.� For the last four years we have put on a show in February that we call 
Sushi Burgers.� We take a number of short skits from 3 to 5 minutes long and 
pull the names of those skits randonly from a hat.� The cast members have a 
few seconds to grab props and get on stage and then perform their show.

After four years of scouring every available source for new shows, I stumbled 
(Luckily I might add) across your website.� After looking through the skits 
displayed here I feel that some of them would be ideal for the kind of show that 
we're putting on, with just a little adaptation to make them suitable for stage 
rather than screen.

Here's the dilemma.� I couldn't find anywhere on the site what you would charge 
for your shows.� If you nedded a list of the specific shows that we would be using 
I can have the other directors look the shows over, and make thier choices.�

To be honest we don't make a great deal of profit yet, and most of the time all that 
we can offer is a space in our program for the website that the shows were taken 
from, and of course the authors name is entered with the name of the show.� We 
do have a small budget, but definitely not the kind of money that would come from 
a sitcom.

Mail-to-blog problem

I thought that it would be a good idea to add a mail-to-blog feature to sillytech. Basically there would be a blog@sillytech.com email address and anything you sent there would get posted here. Based on the email address it was sent from it would set the Posted by to your account.

The problem with that is that it's very easy to forge the From field in the email protocol. So anyone could post as anyone.

One solution to this problem is to include your password or a secret word in the subject or body of the email. This guarantees that you are the real person.

The problem with this is that if you want to mail an entry to your blog as well as CC some other people then you give away your password in the CCs. This would be a useful feature to have in order to spread announcements as widely as possible.

I can't come up with a solution that allows authors to be verified and allows CCs as well. Ug.

I've added a little notepad thang to sillytech. It's just a way for me to write stuffs down for later when I am not at my computer. Access it from the new 'Jot a Note' link in the sidebar. It's very minimalist for now, some bells and/or whistles may be added in the future.
