As everyone knows, the Stanley Cup is awarded on the basis of a failed charitable purpose trust and is in all likelihood legally owned by some British guy descended from Lord Stanley of Preston who doesn't realize it.

Putting aside the fascinating topic of nineteenth century trust law, I just wanted to point out that Brent Rathgerber, a Member of Parliament from Edmonton, described the Stanley Cup as the "trophy du jour of the NHL", because he is a dumbass and doesn't know that there's a difference between "du jour", a French expression meaning "of the day", and "de jure", a Latin expression meaning "in law". Or he thinks he is ordering the soup in law at nice restaurants.

His legal analysis is ridiculous: so the "Canadian people" automatically own anything that has ever belonged to a governor general? Then I would like Adrienne Clarkson's porcelain doll collection, please. If the Stanley Cup trust has failed, then the trust property reverts to Lord Stanley, his heirs and successors.

He also asks "what could be more Canadian" than letting a bunch of drunken beer leaguers play for one of the world's most prestigious sports trophies? If he thinks horrible ideas are typically Canadian, then really he should be running for the Bloc quebecois.

It's horrifying to think that someone who understands so little about the most important things in life, hockey and trust law, has been elected to public office (Although it was an Alberta election -- let's see how he does when they switch to multiparty democracy).

The Old Port of Montreal is a federal government corporation. Corporation president Claude Benoit charged $10,000 to the corporation to prepare a report on things that sort of reminded her of the Old Port while she was vacationing in Australia and New Zealand.

For those of you who do not know these two men, one is a corrupt, weak leader in a land controlled by druglords whose re-election was made possible through a farcical, sham process, while the other is the president of Afghanistan.

Congratulations also go out to newly-acclaimed Mayor Gis�le Chapleau and the six acclaimed counsellors of L'Ile-Dorval (results available here), a city with no residents.

Below is a copy of a letter I wrote to Bob Runciman, provincial Leader of the Opposition of Ontario. Be warned: strong language.

Dear Sir:

Recently, you told reporters that you supported federal Bill C-10, which would allow Ottawa to retroactively strip tax credits from films that the heritage minister deems are offensive or not in the public interest. You suggested the film, "Young People Fucking", as an example of a film to which such a law ought to apply.

"I don't know what the contents of the movie are, but certainly the title would suggest that it's something that generally taxpayers would not be too damned enthused about having their money put into its production," you are quoted as saying.

I am writing, on behalf of all taxpayers, our outrage, shock and disgust that you would use the word "d*mned", an offensive, appalling word that shocks our sensibilities. May I remind you that your salary and all of your expenses as Leader of the Opposition of Ontario are payed for by the taxpayers, and we are not too flubbing enthusiastic about having our money go toward you using your potty mouth in public.

If you cannot properly use censorship on yourself, I must question your ability as future premier of Ontario to judge which films to censor for using naughty words. Shame on you!

Important issues

Two important political events flew under the radar this week. First, the courts ruled that political parties do not need to get 2% of the vote to get federal funding. This is very good news for the Bloc Quebecois de l'Ontario; we no longer have to try to get a large number of people to vote for us.

Also, a woman protested the tax treatment of income trusts in a bikini at the Liberal Party debate over the weekend. I am very encouraged that the most serious and eloquent public discussion of tax policy comes from a misprinted sign held by someone in sequined swimwear; it shows that people are receptive to messages coming from people as serious and determined as those of our party.
