Apple is moving to Intel chips

There were a host of rumors the past few days about it, but I didn't believe it. Now the WWDC keynote is over and Steve Jobs confirmed it: Apple is ditching PowerPC and moving to Intel. It's a phased shift that will be fully finished (in new products) by 2007.

This is a huge bombshell in macland.

I guess if it means Macs will get significantly faster then it's good. I was always under the impression that PowerPC chips ran much cooler than x86 though. In the past 5 years Apple has told lots of stories about how the PowerPC architecture trumps x86 in performance and heat production. There's been less of that recently, and I guess they decided they were wrong.

What makes this really strange is the fact that Microsoft is switching from Intel to PowerPC chips for the upcoming XBox...

Anyway, it won't really affect me as a developer much. I use Java, which is platform independent (actually it's a platform of its own that has been made to run on all other platforms). So my Mac OS X version of Lux should 'just work' on the new Intel Macs. Thank you Java.
