San FransiscoMy first reaction on seeing the hotel I am staying at (which Apple setup for students) was "Wowsa, this place is fancy-pants". My first reaction to the street that said hotel is on was "Wowsa, I'm in bumtown". The street is Market street, which I have been informed is the bumiest streets in san fran. There are all sorts of crazies who have all their valuables displayed on the street for sale. These 'valuables' mainly consist of dirty clothes, old books and assorted tapes/CDs. I don't know if there is some law stating that anyone may sell their wares on market street, but it seems like an interesting idea (while it isn't the nicest in practice).Friday after I arrived I was pretty beat. I napped for a while and then went out clubbing. I managed to find a pretty happening place. The best part was the wacked-out bartender tossing bottles around. I got the strongest run and coke that I have ever tasted. Mmm, drunkenness makes dancing fuuuuuuun. In fact, most every time I go dancing I have lots of fun. I should really do it more often. Saturday I registered for the conference (got a free shoulder bag and a few other fun stuffs) and then went wandering around the city. Saw the museum of modern art, which was actually rather disappointing. There was some cool stuff, but it was mixed in with a lot of boring stuff. Then I hit up the Urban Outfitters. I had been tipped off that good deals were to be had there, and it was true. I bought two shirts for a sum total of $5.40. Such deals used to exist at the montreal Urban Outfitters (i.e. I bought kung-fu grip there for $5), but haven't been seen there anytime recently. Later I ran into some other WWDC students in the hotel and went and had a beer. Today was 'Student Sunday'. We were divided into groups and put to work hacking some code using apple's AddressBook framework. My group had six people, one of whom was one of the dudes who wrote Hydra, a pretty coolio networking text editor. Our finished product wasn't all that great though. I doubt we'll get to lunch with apple executives, which was the prize. The coding was followed by a career fair type deal, except it was rather sparse on companies. Still, there were some interesting sounding thangs, and I handed out some resumes. The actual WWDC proper starts tomorrow with a keynote from Steve Jobs. He is expected to announce some spiffy new computers based around a new CPU from IBM, and other funky stuffs. The exact details are matters of much speculation. It will be the first time I get the opportunity to see Jobs live, and he is supposedly a quality showman. I think I'll try and examine his performance for ideas. Perhaps one day I too will be blessed with a reality distortion field.
