Dear Diary

December 25, 2003

I was gnawing on a bone I found outside an Italian restaurant last night. It was tasty and juicy (though a little too much garlic) and I was savouring a little bit of Christmas joy. Raccoon found a bag of peanuts and was munching on them noisily. Even though there was bit of a wind and thick, white flakes of snow were swirling in the air, Raccoon and I had our usual spot under the vent and ate in comfort. Company and good food. I could have hardly asked for more.

That's when something landed on top of me. I got up immediately and bared my teeth. Raccoon dropped his snack and stood menacingly. I froze, a moment before I was about to launch into this trespasser. Something had been familiar about this intruder and when I saw who it was I was stunned.

Cat. Stupid, lazy, annoying Cat. Glorious, wondrous, angelic Cat.

He took off like a shot once he saw Raccoon and I were ready to rumble. I don't think he recognized me. I followed him as fast as I could. I almost lost him but weeks of lean living had hardened me. Had this been a few months ago, I would certainly have fallen behind. But I kept him in sight and, before I knew it, there I was. The same old mailbox. The same old wooden door. The same old rose bush. The same old evergreen I liked to sleep under in summertime.

I walked up to the front door and barked. I didn't stop until the door opened. A smell entered my nose, a smell that spoke of loving pats on the head and playful fighting. I barked even louder and hopped up on my hind legs.

"Rover!"

I had found Master. I was brought into the warmth of the house and fed and given clean, fresh water. I ate and drank too fast. My stomach still hurts. Cat came in and gave me a dirty look. I don't think he's particularly pleased I'm back. Master spent the whole night playing with me and trying to give me more food. He's in bed and I'm home.

It's a Christmas miracle. I never thought I'd see the day that I'd be glad to see Cat. Unfathomable.

Rover
