Wrong finger, Ben... Teaching babies sign language
4 comments That's cool. You gotta do it.
Kids don’t sign back simply to make conversation. They typically start signing when they feel they need to communicate something to you. Usually, their sign has something to do with eating.
Ah! True origins of the language faculty explained! And yes, you really really have to do this.
The first baby I nannied for back in January had this. At 9 months she had "light" and "music", and the mom was working on the food words.
And of course I kept it up with the second baby.
1) I totally support it (if the caregivers are all game and reinforcing). Just think about the manual conventions we have for expressing stop, shhhh, I-don't-know, where-did-it-go?, etc. Signing is a natural part of communication. 2) You could make up your own signs for things, a so-called natural sign language, instead of using a formal SL (there's also LSQ in Francophone Quebec). 3) Afterall, humans develop their manual motor skills before the oral motor skills of speech are primed. 4) Go for it, connect four.
