Holophonic Demo

You'll want to listen to this with headphones.

I've never understood why holophony hasn't caught on more. Holography is much more prevalent; just look at any credit card. It's not like you even have the barrier to entry of owning a laser to pull it off. (okay, technically you don't need a laser for holography, but the coherence length of regular light sources is shitty in comparison).

Maybe it's just not in certain people's interests to let people know that even shitty headphones have the potential to provide a more realistic sound than an expensive 5.1 surround system.

More crazy thoughts: I wonder what the sensations are like for an elephant listening to holophonic sound. The phase information is different because the recording is intended for a human-sized head. Maybe we can test it on babies and hypercephalic people and ask them how they experience it.

Judging from Ben's reactions, holophony on an infant-sized head induces uncontrollable drooling, inability to walk a straight line and evacuation of the bowels.

That happened to me, too.

If this holophony stuff tickles your fancy, go ask for Janet Cardiff’s audio/video walk at the MACM counter, and I guarantee you an unforgettable art experience. With noir-esque half-narratives, she constructs amazing soundscapes that create the powerful illusion of 3D sound-space. Seriously amazing. She has tons of other work with 3D sound as well.
