In The Viewfinder Has anyone used ebay sniping? Got a preferred service? I've thought about it for a while and a slashdot post got me thinking again. Anyone use ebay in general?
3 comments I just started ebaying this week, and I've been annoyed by having all of my bids sniped. I've been finding that the last second sniped price of the item generally ends up being only a few dollars cheaper than a buy it now price on a comparable item.
This weeks other ebay lesson, beware shipping costs from US sellers. Buying a more expensive item from Canada could be cheaper in the end.
When I bought a laptop off of ebay I found that last minute sniping was the only way to win. Everybody else was doing it, so unless you do too you lose. I didn't use any software, just made sure I was at a computer when the auction was closing and submitted the bid I was willing to pay 30 seconds before the finish.
I have had good experiences with buy it now pricing. If you aren't in a rush (ie. you've got a week or two) you can usually get a buy it now lower than many auction prices. Also you don't have the transaction costs involved in sitting at your computer and trying to time the perfect last bid. Also, if you have a girlfiend in the US you can ship stuff to her and avoid shipping and tax issues.
