When i was in Beijing in 2001 i was buying a coat from a stand and trying to negotiate the price through my Chinese home-stay friend. I ended up not buying it because my friend said i was getting ripped off. He later explained to me that the shop owner had been quite upset that he, a Chinese person, would help a foreigner.

What a dummy that guy is! Run out of a cab without paying and stealing your taxi driver's license in, say, L.A., and I think the taxi driver would come after you with worse than a mop. That just seems to me to be reckless behaviour in order to avoid being conned for, what, five bucks?

I've never been in a country where someone didn't try to con me or someone I was travelling with. My advice is this: when you see someone trying to scam you, stop talking to them, put down your apple tea, and walk away.
