Thank God You're Here

There is a new show coming to NBC called Thank God You're Here.

It seems to basically be a simple improv game where a player enters a scene and is greeted with that line and then has to improvise his or her way through the rest of the scene, not knowing what they've just entered. The hook is that the "players" are celebrity actors. There is also a judge (Dave Foley), who can honk a horn if the scene sucks, like in TheatreSports.

Apparently it was a hit in Australia and they are importing it over here. I always think improv on TV is tricky, but somehow this sounds fun and doable. It starts April 9th.

Check it out!

I managed to stomach about 20 minutes of this program (episode #2). Any comparison to "Whose Line" is an insult to the earlier series. This may have been a big success in Australia, but the US version misses the mark. Having an audience that must be responding to a laugh prompter is not helping. I was too busy cringing at the pandering laughter to notice if there was anything truly funny.
I hope the audience numbers are sufficiently low to send a fast and loud signal to NBC to axe this show. Any self-respecting performer should avoid this one like the plague!

Why is it intelligent programs like Studio 60 get replaced by drivel like this?
