Pedal to the MTL

Bixi, a bike sharing service starts next spring in Montreal.

For 28$ a month, you can grab a bike from any of the 300 central MTL stations and use it for 30 mins and drop it off at any other station. Using it for more than 30 mins incurs additional charges.

There are plans to expand it each year.

$28 a month is $336 a year. You could just buy a bike, ride it for as long as you want and not have to drop it off anywhere. Maybe the people who only want to bike during the summer will find this cheaper than buying a bike. But I bet a lot of summer bikers are recreational bikers, i.e., people who will want a bike for more than 30 minutes at a time. Anyone disagree?

There's actually an option to have an annual membership for only 78$.

Plus, at 78$ a year, you never have to worry about your bike being stolen. In MTL, that's huge. Only worry about the increase in next year's fees due to massive theft.

The convenience factor of being able to grab a bike for a bit when you're out and about is pretty huge. Different style then having your own bike (which has it's own advantages also).

I think it's awesome Montreal is trying this. I hope they make it work well.
