Blogging the Montreal fringe festivalThe Montreal fringe festival started yesterday and I enjoyed the occasion by going to see a performance by the Canadian sketch comedy troop The Imponderables. Before the show even started the impression was that these guys were professionals. Something not really expected at the fringe festival. They had four nice colored background banners as their set, with impressions of their faces on them. Plus they had a full glossy flyer/program. One of my companions was really put off by how pretentious they were coming across as. There were no less than 5 self portraits of the four members on their glossed-up handout. This impression wasn't lessened when they came out to the announcer saying "The Imponderables: Some people love them, some people want to be them, the rest just haven't seen them". The initial atmosphere (at least from my front-row vantage point) was a little hostile in fact. Luckily for me (and them I guess) their comedy magnificence won me over. They had a good variety of skits, with almost all of them being very funny. They did seem quite professional, but I thought that was a good point. All of the in-between sketch change-overs were done very well. They would dim the lights and kick in some music as soon as a sketch was done, and they proceed to do a little choreographed arranging of the set. Tossing chairs to each other and occasionally yelling (Howard Dean style almost). It worked really well. As another one of my companions remarked "They were never not putting on a show!". So I give a big thumbs-up to The Imponderables. Check them out if you have a chance.
