A random Sillysoft update Since I got back from my travels I've been mostly working. I have 2 separate but related projects in the works.
The first is a major update to Lux. As much as I try to start working on other things, Lux keeps sucking me back in. This update will offer some really cool new things. Maps will be able to specify starting scenarios (e.g. you could play out WW2 starting from the conditions on the ground in 1940), the multiplayer chat is enhanced with some colors and other funky stuff, the graphics engine has been updated to allow maps to contain images overtop of countries, and some kick-ass new explosions are being added. Plus there are a ton of little things being improved/added as well. When this gets released I'm going to up Lux's price to $24.95. It will either be called Lux 5.0 or Lux Wars. Any thoughts on the naming?
The second project I've got going on involves taking the Lux engine and using it to create a simpler, more packaged game. It will have some story elements that the player gets lead through (as opposed to Lux which is very open-ended), and will try and do away with as much complexity as possible (as opposed to Lux which keeps on adding more options and features). It's going to be an experiment to take the core gameplay that makes Lux fun and package it up so it's targeted towards the mass-market 'casual games' market, and not just strategy gamers. It's going to be an interesting experiment at the very least.
5 comments Names: Lux 5.0 sounds a bit better than Lux Wars but if you're looking to attract new users then a name that doesn't reference versions might be a better choice. New users can be put off/confused by revisions in the name.

You should make those luxers who are already so happy with you shell out for these new features in an expansion pack.
That way you can also bundle the expansion plus the original for that increased price.
I'm pretty sure I would face a backlash if I asked for an upgrade fee. I think it's a good practice to keep my customers as rabidly happy as they are. I've been constantly amazed at how many new people the internet can hold. They seem to just keep coming. Comparatively I don't have that many customers now anyways.
Plus charging an upgrade fee would mean I'd have to get a system set up for it and stuff. Maybe when I have a zillion customers I will put out a paid upgrade. Not this time though.
Yeah but these people that bought on early on are getting all this additonal stuff for free!!! Its time they paid their dues!
