Yes, this is the most important issue

I don't know if you folks have been following the Canadian election (the flaming ball of excitement that it is), but a duel of petitions has broken out. Explaining the back story would be long and tedious so suffice it to say there are two competing petitions, one that says kids are more important than beer and another that says beer is more important than kids.

Beer-not-kids link here.
I think you all know what you have to do.
Ps: Even you, Vinny. I know where your true loyalties lie.

Who says they are mutually exclusive? Kids love beer!

Do I have to start a petition: Kids And Beer?

When i posted this (25 minutes ago) kids-not-beer had about 3000 signatures and beer-not-kids had 400. Let's see how long it takes for Canada's beer drinkers to trounce the Conservatives.

I can't believe this passes for a scandal:

Reid, a combative figure known for his quick wit and short temper, ran into trouble when asked about a plan by the Conservatives to hand out C$1,200 ($1,040) a year to parents of young children to help pay for day care.

"Working families need care. They need care that is regulated, safe and secure, and that's what we're building here. Don't give people C$25 a day to blow on beer and popcorn," Reid told CBC television.

That is the obvious pitfall to the Conservatives' plan. Reid called it like it absolutely is--some parents will waste the money rather than spend it on their kids. Sure it's a bit insulting to the electorate, but does anyone actually doubt there's a lot of truth in what he says?

(Of course, there's already the child care tax benefit, a similar family supplement for low-to-mid income families that the Liberals have increased during their tenure, so Reid's statement does seem a bit disingenuous.)

Given that it is probably a lot cheaper just to give parents money that to administer a whole daycare system, the Liberals do have to knock down the Conservatives ideas exactly like Reid has. The Libs must say "your idea won't guarantee child care", and the Tories have to say "your idea costs too much and we trust Canadians".

I applaud Scott Reid for his cohones.

This little scandal, and Martin's ban on handguns (which are already pretty much illegal), just demonstrate that either Canadian politicians are stupid, or they think Canadian voters are stupid. Either way, really, we are so screwed.

$25 a day? Where does this guy get his beer and popcorn, the Ritz-Carleton?

Or the Bell Centre?

I think probably at a movie theatre, Chris.

PETITION UPDATE:
Beer Not Kids - 2,734 signatures
Kids Not Beer - 3,344 signatures

It's not looking very good for the kids.

"Scott Reid hires own Communication Director.
December 13, 2005 10:43AM (EST)
OTTAWA (CBI) – Following a political gaffe in which he suggested that Canadian parents would just spend child-care money on beer and popcorn, Liberal Communication Director Scott Reid has appointed a Liberal-Communication-Director Communication Director. “The role of the Liberal-Communication-Director Communication Director,” said Reid, “is to ensure that the media receive a clear articulation of the vision of the Liberal Communication Director, whose job it is to clearly articulate the vision of the Prime Minister.” "
