Planning for the future I was thinking today about my future. I am currently supporting myself from shareware sales, and that is good. The Windows version is now available which will hopefully lead to more sales (but hasn't caused a big spike yet). However, because I only get money when new customers buy Lux, eventually the derived income will eventually dry up.
So then, what for the future?
I figure it's easier to repeat myself as much as possible. That would mean creating another game. Hopefully similar to Lux. And so world, I do hereby proclaim that I will create an Axis and Allies style computer game. It's another game that I played a lot in high school. And in a non-so-strict sense the rules are a superset of Risk rules. This means that I could probably reuse a whole lot of Lux's code. And it fulfills some of the more intense user requests like map files that include initial positions.
This is only going to happen after I am done a bunch more hacking on Lux. Yesterday I started creating a plug-in manager. Combined with some other funky stuff it will bring Lux to version 4.0. I think it's a good plan, and I am happy with it.

Awesome! Good luck. | |
And then Diplomacy followed by Lux 2210 followed by Military Scrabble...
Good lux! | |
Sounds good, Dustin, but from a strictly capitalist viewpoint, are you sure that it really is the best avenue to take? From what I understand there's a tiny cottage industry of PC ports for extremely complicated strategy games, and the impression I've gotten is that the market is pretty small. If you're really looking for a money-maker, and not a fun hobby, you should really examine the existing offerings to ensure that the potential pay-off is worth even the relatively small investment.
(I hunted and hunted for the thread I read on MetaFilter or somewhere similar, talking about all of these games, but I can't for the life of me find it. I'll keep looking.)
I would agree that there is a cottage industry around it. The real question then is 'how big is it?'. My experiences have shown me that the size is big enough. I belive that I can take a decent slice of that market. Competition does exist, but Lux matches up pretty well. I probably won't make millions, but that's OK for now.
You sound like you've done yr homework (which doesn't surprise me), so I'm sure you'll succeed exactly as you intend. Best of luck!
