Fore! Without looking...
Would you say foregoed or forewent?
15 comments I never really thought about it, but since you ask the question, I would say 'forewent'.
They both sound wrong but I actually think I'd use 'forgoed'. (As in, "Oh, forgoed's sake".)
Forgoed.
But I would only use it forgoeding purposes. Like, "You use forwent? Its forgoed, you idiot! What? What are you gonna do? Punch me? I'd like to see you try! You don't have the---ow. I wish you forwent that urge."
Did without?
I'd pick 'forgoed'. | |
Forwent. MDR peeked, I saw him.
The imperfect of "forego" must be "have foregone", otherwise we wouldn't have the adjective "foregone" (e.g., "foregone conclusion"). So "forego" must be an irregular verb, which surely means the past tense is formed the same way as its root word, "go".
Go - have gone - went
Forego - have foregone - forewent
I remember reading somewhere that English has the most irregular verbs of any language. It makes Mrs. R.D. Vandertramp seem easy (if you know what I mean).

The correct answer is: forewent or forwent
You can't oppress me with your prescriptivist fiats! I'll say foregoed if I want to!
I agree with goodladd. My linguistics degree gives me the ability to say, "Screw you, a-hole" with a certain air of authority. I believe Chomsky said it first...
In a weird coincidence, I used "forewent" in a sentence last week:
"Is that actually a word?" "It is now!"
Now I find out that I didn't actually coin a word. Damn you dictionary!

I agree with the ladd and the browD that Bryan's facist thinking is holding me down.
