Saying goodbye to Montreal

2 years ago I made an oath that I wouldn't spend another winter in frigid Montreal. Last year I escaped and went traveling for 3 snowy months. Now I'm finally taking the big step. I'm leaving Montreal for good. I'm getting rid of my apartment and liquidating my assets as much as possible.

My plan is to go out to Vancouver and live there for a while. I've only been there for a few days, but I enjoyed it and everything I've heard about it has been positive (except the rain). So it seems like a good idea to go and try it out. This would also complete my Canadian Trifecta of having lived in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.

I've lived in Montreal for over 5 years now, and I can confidently say that its been the best time of my life. It's hard leaving it behind, especially all my friends here. I know that I'm making the right decision every time I'm outside now though (it was -10 C today). I'm just a lot happier when I can go outside and frolic. When I look back, my memories of Montreal will be dominated by lovely summer days spent in the park. It's even possible that Vancouver might not fulfill my climate needs. I'm going to go there and try it out, but I admit my mind has a few more tropical places lined up as future possibilities.

I'm leaving on December 20th, which is awfully soon. I'll go to Toronto for the holidays with my family, and then head out west in January. I still have a bunch of stuff I need to get rid off (and some more smaller stuff that I didn't photo). I'm happy to give any of it to friends that want it. Or offer me a lowball price and it's yours.

Montreal is an amazing city, and I've had a great time here. Now it's time to say goodbye though. Goodbye.

I'm interested in the drums!

I'm also totally bummed that you're leaving. You will be sorely missed, buddy. I should have posted this first... drums make me giddy.

That was me.

I second the being bummed.

That sounded dirty.

It won't be the same without you, Dustbo.

Bryan, you want all the drums? There are 2 real ones and 1 toy one.

Laddy, thanks for your wishes (you too Bryan).

Maryam, yes I'll be at workshop on Saturday. Also, I still plan to use up my cinema du parc card with some help for others.

Those that want stuff are encouraged to come over to my apartment and take it off my hands as soon as possible.

Hello Dustin, sorry to see you go. Though

Now, that HP32Sii is pretty sweet. A discontinued RPN calculatorm, wow. Truly, a testament to your nerdiness.

I would like it, but can't figure out how much it should be worth. So I would like it cheap, but if its worth alot to you, then I may have to think about it.

Oh this is Ben, by the way.

I realize I should have taken it last time, but as long as your toaster oven works twice in a row it's better than mine and I'd like it. So, when Andrew gets back into town, he'll come get it. (Right, Andrew? Please?!)

Oh and I think you know how I feel about you leaving, but I'm going to miss having you around and hanging out. And watching you give headshots. And barrels of monkeys. And general hooplah.

I was in Vancouver last January and I loved it. I'm used to tropical weather in Florida, but I found Vancouver's climate tolerable. I wouldn't mind living there & I could work onsite instead of telecommuting.

Dustin, i will be sorry to see you go. PS. Adrienne needs your fan whether she remembers how freakin' uncomfortable her appartment is in summer or not.

Oh dearest Dustin,

I'll never forget our dates we went on...those movies are forever etched into my mind. I don't remember which ones they were, but sitting with you is etched in my mind. I'll also never forget our wonderful dinners at Carlos and Waste
Your Whole Fucking Evening. Being coerced into buying drinks too big for any sane person was wonderful. I'll also never forget how I took photos at a B-day party of yours and then forgot to send them to you. I should do that.

PS Your name sounds like dustbin, but I didn't think of a decent pun other then that your are a dustbin of fun. That rhymes but lacks the sensicality to put in the post. I just put in in the post though...

Ken's right. I meant to ask for the fan. I tried to buy one at Canadian Tire this year and they were all gone.
comment by Adrienne (#149) on December 13, 2005

Hey Dustin, I'm going to miss you as well. Who else is there who can bully me around or say things like "You're MOTHER sucks!" as good as you do?
On a serious note, it's been fun hanging out at your many apartments (2) and doing crazy things like make a kung fu movie that never got finished or doing interviews at the Tam Tams. Have a great time in Vancouver. I was only there for 3 days and LOVED it. My cousin lives out there. He's a bit older (33) but he's a cool guy and I can always pass his onto you. See you on saturday!

You're an amazing person, and you'll have a great time in any city. Go go world domination!

godspeed, dustin!
comment by Sean on December 13, 2005

Thank you for showing me how to be more carefree and how to make noodles with sausage. It was fun living with you and I know you'll be fine wherever you go. I'm getting varklempt.

I'll come by soon. Sigh.

Boo! Dustin sucks (for leaving)!

At least you won't be too far away on Sillytech. I can't wait to start making fun of your new friends who try posting here.

PS: Amazon.com emailed me to say that you will only have to eat a small bag of dicks come the apocalypse. Possibly even a ziplock with a single dick.

Dustin, this is Marc. You have a strong sense of self. I appreciate/fear your constant bucking of the rules. You are fun. You're always looking out for number one, which is important, but won't you be surprised when one day I cover you with "number two"!

Since you left me a long time ago (I live in toronto) I cannot say that I am very bummed by this move. Vancouver is rainy, though, and I hear it has a high suicide rate because of it.

You really need to move to Mexico or something.
comment by James on December 15, 2005

I'm flying to Vancouver on January 7th. One way baby!
comment by dustin (#1) on December 16, 2005

Yay, boo, yay. You are you, Dusty, don't you forget it. I hope you find your niche, wherever you find yourself.
