Shatner According to this post, McImprov had a hand in naming the Shatner Building:
To our immense surprise, the votes were overwhelming, and the name was changed. It sort of started with some people involved in the improv comedy troupe. Was there really a vote? I know the name isn't official...

[T]he Student Union building of which was renamed The Shatner Building in 1989 following a referendum by the Student Union; although used by all students, the name is not officially recognized by the university, which still refers to the building as Student Union Building

I'm sure I don't need to remind you that Dustin and I, during our McGill Improv years, were also behind a sadly unsuccessful campaign to have New Rez dubbed 'The Nimoy Building'.
Also, what awesome publicity! "Come see the people who named Shatner Shatner!" etc.
The Shatner Award makes so much sense now!
McGill owns the "University Centre" building and rents it to SSMU for $1 per year. SSMU held a student referendum in the early '90s to name the Building the "William Shatner University Centre". This got a record turnout for a SSMU referendum, so SSMU hung up a sign on the inside of the building calling it this.
McGill's senate has never voted on renaming the building, and since they own it, the name change is "unofficial" (i.e., only recognized by SSMU). Generally, McGill only names buildings after people who make a major contribution to the school, such as donors, principals, famous researchers, etc.
